Mate, or yerba mate, also known as the Jesuits' tea, is a traditional South American beverage. In Argentina and Brazil, it is enjoyed throughout the day “on the go” in a calabash gourd. Mate is a stimulating drink, containing quite a lot of caffeine just like coffee, and many vitamins. It is a nervous system stimulant and is good for the heart. It is often used as the basic ingredient in herbal weight-loss preparations or when fasting because it reduces appetite. The slight bitterness of mate is softened and sweetened with orange blossom, orange peel and liquorice root.
